Expand Your Singing: Vocal Improvisation Workshop

Expand Your Singing is a vocal improvisation workshop led by professional Jazz singer, Marti Mendenhall.  This hands-on, interactive class provides attendees an opportunity to expand their vocal freedom by embracing the mystical art of Jazz improvisation commonly known as, scat.  The two hour workshop begins with a brief history of scat that covers past and present samples of Jazz greats and cultural adaptations to this unique art form. Through a visual presentation and real time practice, students gain experience with Do-Be-Do-Wa, suggestions to improve breathing, rhythm, and timing as well as acquire a range of ideas and enthusiasm to apply the tools of scat to their singing.

Marti has conducted her Scat Workshop at Humboldt State University, the Unitarian Universalist Musician Conference as well as to small and large professional and amateur choirs.  Like scat itself, the workshop is often spontaneous and can be adapted for any musical setting, including music conferences, Jazz festivals and church and school choirs.
